Sentimentalists ... Adopt whatever merit is in good repute, and almost make it hateful with their praise. The warmer their expressions, the colder we feel.... Cure the drunkard, heal the insane, mollify the homicide, civilize the pawnee, but what lessons can be devised for the debauchee of sentiment?

The stars at night stoop down over the brownest, homeliest common, with all the spiritual magnificence which they shed on the campagna, or on the marble deserts of egypt.
All things are flowing, even those that seem immovable. The adamant is always passing into smoke. The plants imbibe the materialswhich they want from the air and the ground. They burn, that is, exhale and decompose their own bodies into the air and earth again. The animal burns, or undergoes the like perpetual consumption. The earth burns, the mountains burn and decompose, slower, but incessantly.
