What keeps you going isn't some fine destination but just the road you're on, and the fact that you know how to drive. You keep your eyes open, you see this damned-to-hell world you got born into, and you ask yourself, 'what life can i live that will let me breathe in & out and love somebody or something and not run off screaming into the woods?
To the young mind every thing is individual, stands by itself. By and by, it finds how to join two things and see in them one nature; then three, then three thousand; and so, tyrannized over by its own unifying instinct, it goes on tying things together, diminishing anomalies, discovering roots running under ground whereby contrary and remote things cohere and flower out from one stem.
There is nothing that teaches you more than regrouping after failure and moving on. Yet most people are stricken with fear. They fear failure so much that they fail. They are too conditioned, too used to being told what to do. It begins with the family, runs through school and goes into the business world.
Our concern is to help people counter the efforts of those who seek to "regiment the public mind every bit as much as an army regiments the bodies of its soldiers," so that the self-designated "responsible men" will be able to run the affairs of the world untroubled by the "bewildered herd" - the general public - who are to be marginalized and dispersed, directed to personal concerns, in a well-regulated "democracy."
I said there was nothing so convincing to an indian as a general massacre. If he could not approve of the massacre, i said the next surest thing for an indian was soap and education. Soap and education are not as sudden as a massacre, but they are more deadly in the long run; because a half-massacred indian may recover, but if you educate him and wash him, it is bound to finish him some time or other.
Isn't it a remarkable coincidence almost everyone has the same religion as their parents ? And it always just happens to be the right religion. Religions run in families. If we'd been brought up in ancient greece we would all be worshiping zeus and apollo. If we had been born vikings we would be worshiping wotan and thor. How does this come about ? Through childhood indoctrination.
The manufacturing industry is starting to press for some kind of national healthcare. Now it's beginning to put it on the agenda. It doesn't matter if the population wants it. What 90% of the population wants would be kind of irrelevant. But if part of the concentration of corporate capital that basically runs the country - another thing we're not allowed to say but it's obvious - if part of that sector becomes in favor then the issue moves onto the political agenda.
There are always more questions. Science as a process is never complete. It is not a foot race, with a finish line.... People will always be waiting at a particular finish line: journalists with their cameras, impatient crowds eager to call the race, astounded to see the scientists approach, pass the mark, and keep running. It's a common misunderstanding, he said. They conclude there was no race. As long as we won't commit to knowing everything, the presumption is we know nothing.
It wouldn't be my move," jace agreed. " first the candy and flowers, then the apology letters, then the ravenous demon hordes. In that order." "he might have sent her candy and flowers," isabelle said. "we don't know." "isabelle," said hodge patiently, "this is the man who rained down destruction on idris the like of which it had never seen, who set shadowhunter against downworlder and made the streets of the glass city run with blood." "that's sort of hot," isabella argued, " that evil thing.
People who are knowledgeable about poetry sometimes discuss it in that knowing, rather hateful way in which oenophiles talk about wine: robust, delicate, muscular. This has nothing to do with how most of us experience it, the heart coming around the corner and unexpectedly running into the mind. Of all the words that have stuck to the ribs of my soul, poetry has been the most filling.
It seems to me that the chief thing about a woman - who is much of a woman - is that in the long run she is not to be had... She is not to be caught by any of the catch-words, love, beauty, honor, duty, worth, work, salvation - none of them - not in the long run. In the long run she only says am i satisfied, or is there some beastly dissatisfaction gnawing and gnawing inside me. And if there is some dissatisfaction, it is physical, at least as much as psychic, sex as much as soul.
You take i-55 south, and you'll run into i-20. Or you could take..." i was about to be overloaded with information. "oh that sounds just perfect. Let me do just that, or i'll lose track." sure, glad i could help." oh, you surely did." we beamed at each other, just two nice women. I had to fight an impulse to say "i have a tortured vampire in my trunk," out of sheer giddiness.
What i am really saying is that you dont need to do anything, because if you see yourself in the correct way, you are all as much extraordinary phenomenon of nature as trees, clouds, the patterns in running water, the flickering of fire, the arrangement of the stars, and the form of a galaxy. You are all just like that, and there is nothing wrong with you at all.
Everybody has noticed the way cats stop and loiter in a half-open door. Hasn't everyone said to a cat: for heavens sake why don't you come in? With opportunity half-open in front of them, there are men who have a similar tendency to remain undecided between two solutions, at the risk of being crushed by fate abruptly closing the opportunity. The overprudent, cats as they are, and because they are cats, sometimes run more danger than the bold
I realized that my book readings were boring me. I was going to go up there and read a passage and sleepwalk through the whole event and i needed to make it more interesting. I wanted to be running and jumping and do something so that the event would be so exciting. I had to trick myself into having fun every time.
Take pandemics. There could easily be a severe pandemic. A lot of that comes from something we don't pay much attention to: eating meat. The meat production industry, the industrial production of meat, uses an immense amount of antibiotics. We're now running out of antibiotics that deal with the threat of rapidly mutating bacteria. A lot of that just comes from the meat production industry. Well, do we worry about it? Well, we ought to be.
I am not much an advocate for traveling, and i observe that men run away to other countries because they are not good in their own, and run back to their own because they pass for nothing in the new places. For the most part, only the light characters travel. Who are you that have no task to keep you at home?
It was beautiful and rare, and you have every right to despise me." she stood pressed to the wall, not moving. "when you came in, i thought 'send her away.' but i knew that if you went away, i'd run after you. I thought 'i won't say a word.' but i knew that you'd know it before you left. I love you. I know you'd think kindlier of me if i said that i hate you.
Courage is about learning how to function despite the fear, to put aside your instincts to run or give in completely to the anger born from fear. Courage is about using your brain and your heart when every cell of your body is screaming at your to fight or flee - and then following through on what you believe is the right thing to do.
