Our german language has a word which in a magnificent way denotes conduct based on this spirit: doing one's duty [pflichterfllung]-which means serving the community instead of contenting oneself. We have a word for the basic disposition which underlies conduct of this kind in contrast to egoism and selfishness-idealism. By 'idealism' we mean only the ability of the individual to sacrifice himself for the whole, for his fellow men.
Friends, comrades and fellow south africans. I greet you all in the name of peace, democracy and freedom for all. I stand here before you not as a prophet but as a humble servant of you, the people. Your tireless and heroic sacrifices have made it possible for me to be here today. I therefore place the remaining years of my life in your hands.
If the german nation wants to end a state of affairs that threatens its extermination in europe, it must not fall into the error of the pre-war period and make enemies of god and the world; it must recognize the most dangerous enemy and strike at him with all its concentrated power. And if this victory is obtained through sacrifices elsewhere, the coming generations of our people will not condemn us.
Manevery manis an end in himself, not a means to the ends of others; he must live for his own sake, neither sacrificing himself to others nor sacrificing others to himself; he must work for his rational self-interest, with the achievement of his own happiness as the highest moral purpose of his life.
The basic idea that the purpose of life is to be happy or is to experience the most favorable ratio of pleasure to suffering or productivity to work or gratification to sacrifice or any of that stuff, which, you know, a couple generations ago, to say that kind of stuff would have made you, you know, a freak - a freak and an epicurean - and now seems to be so much - simply an unquestioned assumption of the culture that we don't really even talk about it anymore.
Who is jesus to me? Jesus is the word made flesh. Jesus is the bread of life. Jesus is the victim offered for our sins on the cross. Jesus is the sacrifice offered at holy mass for the sins of the world and for mine. Jesus is the word - to be spoken. Jesus is the truth - to be told. Jesus is the way - to be walked. Jesus is the light - to be lit. Jesus is the life - to be lived. Jesus is the love - to be loved
There will never be peace between us. ever. you shattered any hope of it when you watched your brother kill me and refused to speak up on my behalf. (acheron) i was afraid. (artemis) and i was butchered and gutted on the floor like an animal sacrifice. excuse me if i don’t feel your pain. i’m too busy with my own. (acheron)
Of all the statist violations of individual rights in a mixed economy, the military draft is the worst. It is an abrogation of rights. It negates mans fundamental right-the right to life-and establishes the fundamental principle of statism: that a mans life belongs to the state, and the state may claim it by compelling him to sacrifice it in battle. Once that principle is accepted, the rest is only a matter of time.
I have often felt as though i had inherited all the defiance and all the passions with which our ancestors defended their temple and could gladly sacrifice my life for one great moment in history. And at the same time i always felt so helpless and incapable of expressing these ardent passions even by a word or a poem.
